The Hon Con Sciacca AO

In 1951, Con Sciacca migrated to Australia, together with his parents, as part of the post-war immigration boom from Southern Europe.  In 1970, Con was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland.  He was elected to the Australian Parliament in 1987 and served under Prime Ministers Hawke and Keating.  He served as the Federal Member for the electorate of Bowman Queensland from 1987 until 1996 and from 1998 until 2004.  During his time in Parliament, Con served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Social Security and to the Minister for Arts and Administrative Services.  In 1994, he was appointed Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and in 1995 was given the additional Ministry as Minister assisting the Treasurer for Superannuation.  During his period as Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Con conceived, devised and administered the Australia Remembers program to commemorate the 50th  Anniversary of the end of World War II.  Con is a Foundation Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and remains the Senior and Managing Partner of his legal firm, Sciaccas Lawyers and Consultants.  He is the Queensland Patron of the Ex-Prisoners of War Association Queensland and serves as honorary legal advisor to other Veteran organisations including the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces, Queensland Branch.  He is a Foundation director and still serves as a director of the Gallipoli Research Foundation (Queensland) which is a medical research facility specialising in veteran health issues attached to the Greenslopes Private Hospital.  Con is married to Karen and they have one daughter.
