Professor Christine Charles

Professor Christine Charles has a wide range of experience across the public, private and community sectors.  She is an independent Chair or board member of a number of bodies in both the government and private sectors.  She also provides strategic advice to a number of companies in oil, gas and mining.  During 2009 and 2010 Christine was a Special Adviser on social and environmental policy to the CEO, Minerals Council of Australia.  Until mid 2009 Christine was Global Group Executive, Sustainability and External Affairs with Newmont Mining Corporation.  Christine’s role extended across Newmont’s interests globally with particular focus on leading Newmont’s performance in relation to Human Rights, Indigenous Affairs and Sustainable Development.  Prior to that, she had responsibility for Newmont’s environmental and social performance in the Asia Pacific Region.  Christine was the Chief Executive of the South Australian Department of Human Services from 1997 to early 2002.  She headed the South Australian Cabinet Office for four years after holding a number of senior government positions.  She has worked for the World Health Organisation as a senior consultant based at the International Centre for Health Systems Development, Kobe, Japan.  Christine has lectured at university level in politics and geography, and has also worked for a range of community NGOs.  She is an adjunct Professor at the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining at the University of Queensland and is Chair of the Resources Technology Innovation Centre.
